Were these scores on a specific test? I didn't go to school in SF (or a magnet school anywhere) so I'm not familiar with the admissions process.

Re the rest of your post, I'm one of those people who was a National Merit Finalist, scholarship recipient, etc. and thought that academic excellence and getting a PhD was my destiny. All came crashing down due to illness and I had to rethink things and reassess my priorities. That was over 30 years ago, I've had multiple "pivots" since then, and I'm still rethinking things...
