Though this might have been true of the trans folks interviewed by Tyler’s parents, it’s a common misconception that all trans people know their authentic selves from a young age. Unfortunately, no matter when we discover our true identities we face disbelief, mockery, and discrimination. If as children, we’re “too young to know”, if as adults, we “should have known earlier”. The latter response even comes from some within the trans community. All trans and non-binary folks could use more support and validation, not more gatekeeping.
