The “But it’s plural!” objection really should be a non-issue, because singular they is used unconsciously by people all the time, when referring to an unknown person. The only difference is that non-binary folks like ourselves are asking that pronoun to be used for a known person. Singular they has been a regular feature of English grammar for centuries, and that makes that pronoun easier to adopt than many other gender-neutral pronouns (zie/hir, etc.). “You,” by the way, is also both singular and plural, and most English speakers don’t have a problem differentiating between the uses.
