For instance in the Grimm version of Cinderella, the evil stepsisters hack parts of their own feet off in order to fit into the slippers. If this isn’t enough, their eyes are eventually pecked out by doves. Makes you wonder why Wes Craven didn’t make a version of Cinderella.
Stephen Sondheim’s musical Into the Woods included a more authentic telling of the Cinderella story, alongside other tales grisly and disturbing as befitting the composer of Sweeney Todd. The 2014 movie adaptation was good, but it’s worth watching the original stage production.
