Ross Perot came the closest in modern times as an independent in the 1992 election, partly because he had a lot of money. I didn't support him, but smirked when both major parties tried to court his supporters when he temporarily dropped out, then had to backtrack when he re-entered the race.

In any case, as I think I've commented here previously, I do not support either major party and do not plan to vote for a president in this year's election. I will still vote on ballot measures and non-partisan local offices, as usual.
