I hardly think my comment was giving Obama (who, to reiterate, I did not vote for) a “pass”. I still get a little angry when I remember him saying his views on same-sex marriage were “evolving”; i.e., he would not come out publicly in support of marriage equality until the Democratic Party establishment allowed him to do so. Still, his administration at least made some effort to recognize the existence and dignity of trans folks (a much more controversial issue than establishment-friendly marriage), whereas Trump, while campaigning as the first LGBT-friendly Republican candidate, promptly confirmed that was an obvious lie as soon as he took office.

Trans issues aren’t mere “identity politics” or “liberal sacred cows” to me. The implications of being trans are something I have to deal with every waking moment of my life, though I do enjoy significant privilege compared to a lot of trans folks in this country (trans women of color in particular).
