I disagree that working out implies or necessitates going to a gym. While gyms are useful for those who need access to specialized equipment, it's definitely possible for most others to get sufficient physical exercise at home and/or outdoors. I was in the best shape of my life at age 43, when I was doing volunteer work in gardening and food distribution and training for a marathon. Never set foot in a gym during that time. (Though I am privileged to live in San Francisco, where the weather is relatively mild year-round.)

As to the main point of this story, I definitely agree that critical thinking skills are evaporating alongside writing skills. These are the most important skills I got from my college education, back in 1988-92, well before everyone had an AI-powered device in their pocket. I can't imagine the challenges of trying to teach students now, with all the distractions and easy incentives to cheat.
