I consider myself transsexual even though I have not had and do not desire to have surgery* (I transitioned with hormones). I know some older trans folks still prefer the term as well. But as I understand that term also brings up uncomfortable associations for many, I now simply call myself "trans", and never use the term transsexual for others unless they explicitly claim it for themselves.
ETA: To clarify, this is primarily because of the pain, risk, and expense of bottom surgery. If I could magically trade my female-assigned genitals for "fully functional" typical male equivalents, I would do so in a heartbeat.
