I avoid most of Duo's nagging by doing my daily lesson early each morning. I had a really long streak in Spanish (https://funcrunch.medium.com/duolingo-and-my-history-of-lazy-spanish-practice-98c9a5a0d7ae) before taking a break for awhile, and when I did I shut off all notifications and reminders preemptively.

I'm now studying French (https://funcrunch.medium.com/frequent-frenching-for-fun-33ddf21416a9), and my current streak is up to two years and change. Despite the app's assertion that I'm at a "high B1" level of proficiency, I struggle to understand native conversation at normal speed (same problem with Spanish). My reading comprehension is a lot better though.

I also studied German on Duolingo briefly, having taken that language for a year in college back in 1991-92. I find it a lot harder than the Romance languages, due to the declensions.

(I'm @funcrunch on Duolingo, same as on here and most places, if you want to follow me.)
