Historian Garry Wills (who I took a class with at Northwestern around 1990) published an article about the Second Amendment in 1995. His findings seriously call into question whether that amendment actually states that Americans have a right to private gun ownership. It’s a worthwhile read, but most folks nowadays seem to prefer memes, tweets, and sound bites rather than thoughtful scholarship to defend their political views.
The knee-jerk defense of the Second Amendment by Democrats and Republicans alike ignores important historical context, as well as the advances in lethal weapon technology over the centuries. It also fails to consider that the United States in the 21st century should not be beholden to rights framed by and for the benefit of cisgender white male landowners.
