Great points in this essay. I’m 45, a child of professional classical musicians, and a fan of many forms of that genre, as well as jazz. I have sung or played some sort of instrument since preschool; I’ve known how to read music for nearly as long as I’ve known how to read English. It saddens me that many children today are not getting the opportunity to learn this art.
I also enjoy rock music, but I stopped listening to commercial radio somewhere around 1990, despite being a devoted listener to Casey Kasem’s Top 40 during high school. I couldn’t name five songs by any of today’s groomed music celebrities because I ignore them as much as possible. I do support indie artists when I hear music I like, through crowdfunding and buying albums from them directly.
