I don’ t appreciate the author of the piece I’m replying to stating that “we” deserve Trump, as if all Americans are equally responsible for the election of this unrepentant bigot. It is telling that the word “white”, independent of the phrase White House, is only used in the essay once, to describe “squirrelly white dudes” at a Trump rally. White people elected Trump, overwhelmingly, and white people are not the ones who are suffering disproportionately from the unbridled racism of Trump and his supporters.

I am also concerned about the ableist framing of this essay. I do not know if Trump is truly mentally ill, and I don’t know that I can agree with the mental health professionals who felt entitled to diagnose him as such, regardless of the stated need to do so to hasten removing him from office. Regardless, over 60 million people voted for this man, and the statements he made during his campaign about women, Mexicans, and other marginalized groups were horrible enough regardless of his mental state then, or now. I understand that simply being a bigot is not an impeachable offense, but looking to declare Trump mentally unfit instead of impeaching him is risking collateral damage against those truly suffering from mental illness, as well as excusing and burying the actions of those 60+ million Trump voters, who would be eager to elect another bigot to fill his place.

Make no mistake: I want Trump out of the White House. I’ve had a sinking feeling every time I’ve seen his face on my computer or TV screen ever since November 8, 2016, and I’ve attended countless protests since that night. As a queer black trans atheist, I honestly do not know if I can survive a full four years of a Trump presidency, much less eight. But I will not ever forget that this man was put into office by the actions of bigoted white people, and I am tired of that fact being ignored.
